Week #1

Introduction to the course

Professor Erkki Sutinen is the course lecturer and Yve Dai, assists Erkki during the course. Also, she is exercises' sessions teacher too.

Goal of course

The goal of the course is to learn (or improve the knowledge), to do researches in Computer Science/Information Technology. This course will help us, as it has helped us so far, to became a CS/IT scientist, who everyone can rely on us and we will be able to understand CS related problems and solutions. As an example, Erkki demonstrated for us from Finland's news, which has happened in Finland's IT field recently. Finnish IT team developed HIS (Health Information System) for 1.8 billion euros, while Estonian IT team, was able to do so, with only 9 million euros! Erkki told us, as an CS scientist, we should be able to to describe the reasons and comment on such things, in CS area.

Professional Identity

Also Erkki introduced us to the concept of Professional Identity and it's importance. Professional identity, which has two aspects, is is really important for a CS student. It defines a true characteristic for us, and we will be able to understand the society's expectations from us better, know and also in the future. It has two different aspects: Internal and External.

Research, research and research

As Erkki told us, we will do some actual researches, or be prepared for other searches in the future. At the time writing this portfolio, I am working on two different researches: One is for the Research Methods course and me and my friend will work on a particular research method, and the other one, is about doing a research on a research group, which is working on the HIS.

Researches in CS (and also in general), could be categorized as Positive, Critical, Design Science and Interpretive, which in the following lectures (week #3), which Erkki will discuss these aspects more.
